Growing older, her own way

At 104 years old, Baltimore resident Doris Hill has a refreshingly simple philosophy: don't let your age tell you how to live. She shared with CNN that she still cooks for herself, enjoys puzzles, savors the occasional hamburger, and prefers to focus less on the number of birthdays she's celebrated and more on the people and moments that bring her joy.

Her outlook is echoed by her geriatrician, who says healthy aging looks different for everyone and isn't defined by one diet, routine, or milestone. For Hill, the years have brought forth a growing appreciation for the friendships she's built, the life she's lived, and the freedom to embrace each day on her own terms.

New York's First Pet Food Pantry

New York City has plans for its first city-funded pet food pantry, expanding support for low-income pet owners alongside additional funding for free and low-cost spay and neuter services. As Good Good Good reports, the new initiative will partner with community organizations and animal shelters to help families care for their pets during times of financial strain.

The program is designed to make it a little easier for people to keep the animals they love at home, while also helping reduce pressure on local shelters. Pet food will be distributed through existing neighborhood food networks, with more details expected as the rollout begins.

Oregon Libraries Have a New Kind of Adventure

A library card in Oregon can now unlock more than books. Through a partnership between local libraries, the High Desert Museum, and the Department of Fish and Wildlife, residents can borrow trail cameras to capture images of wildlife and contribute to community science.

The cameras offer a chance to spot things most of us rarely see, from nighttime visitors to especially elusive species. As Central Oregon Daily explains, with new local participation, the program will help researchers form an even deeper understanding of the animals that call the region home.

Jane Goodall Institute inspires a deeper connection between people, animals, and the natural world through conservation, education, and community-led action. By empowering the next generation to care for the planet, they remind us that lasting change often begins with one small act of hope.

The Freedom to Travel Differently

Retirement is giving more people the freedom to see the world, but not everyone is doing it with a luxury budget. Drawing on advice from seasoned travelers and travel experts, Travel + Leisure rounded up practical ways to make trips more affordable, from booking during shoulder season and embracing rail travel to taking advantage of last-minute deals and senior discounts.

Many of the biggest savings come from having the flexibility to travel differently. Whether it's swapping hotels for vacation homes, joining educational group tours, or exploring national parks and small towns, the guide shows that memorable travel often has more to do with timing and curiosity than a bigger budget.

When Creativity Keeps Its Own Time

After spending a month trying Julia Cameron's "morning pages" journaling practice, one writer for The Good Trade discovered that her own breakthrough had less to do with writing every morning and more to do with giving herself permission to stop forcing it.

Renaming the practice "daily pages" made it easier to show up consistently. Rather than chasing someone else's ideal routine, she found more clarity and creativity by working with her own natural rhythms.
