Chasing the California coast

Marathon swimmer Catherine Breed is currently making a four-month attempt to become the first person to swim the entire California coastline, covering nearly 900 miles from the Oregon border to Mexico. As reported by SFist, she'll spend up to eight hours a day in the Pacific, supported by a sailboat crew as she navigates cold water, powerful currents, and open ocean wildlife.

Along the way, Breed plans to step ashore for community events through her nonprofit, Sea Dreamers, encouraging others to care for and connect with the ocean. Between long stretches of open water, she'll experience a side of California that few people ever have.

Where new beginnings take shape

In Washington state, a small candle company is helping newly arrived refugees build more than a paycheck. Relume hires refugees to hand-pour sustainable candles while giving them paid opportunities to practice English, gain U.S. work experience, and build the confidence that comes with meaningful employment, reports Positive News.

For employees like Maguno, who spent three decades in a refugee camp before resettling in the U.S., the job meant paying off the travel loan that brought her family to safety. Relume's workshop is also a place where coworkers share meals, volunteers teach language classes, and each candle represents the beginning of a new chapter shaped by dignity, opportunity, and community.

More than just good conversation

Some conversations leave us feeling instantly understood, and science is beginning to explain why. According to mindbodygreen, researchers studying "social synchrony" found that during meaningful face-to-face interactions, our brain activity can begin to align with the person we're talking to. The pattern is linked to stronger connection, learning, and emotional well-being.

The findings also suggest these moments are more likely to happen when we share physical space, whether that's over a meal, during a walk, or simply through everyday conversation. As scientists continue exploring how this phenomenon could support mental health and therapeutic care, the findings offer fresh appreciation for the value of spending time together in person.

Your future fridge might have a nose

The familiar sniff test for leftovers could eventually get a scientific upgrade. Researchers at UC Berkeley have developed an "electronic nose" capable of detecting gases released by spoiled food and even identifying common allergens with greater accuracy than the human sense of smell. The prototype could one day be built into smart refrigerators or portable devices to help make everyday food decisions a little safer.

Powered by an array of tiny gas sensors and machine learning, the device learns the unique fingerprint of different foods as they age or spoil. While it's still in the testing phase, researchers are already envisioning a future where your refrigerator sends a gentle nudge to use the broccoli tonight or lets you know your takeout can be thrown away.

Seven trips worth taking together

The best family vacations often become the stories we tell for years afterward—not because everything goes perfectly, but because we experience something new together. Condé Nast Traveler rounded up seven destinations that offer a balance of adventure, culture, and moments of genuine connection for travelers of every age.

From wildlife safaris in South Africa and rainforest adventures in Costa Rica to cooking classes in Italy and temple visits in Japan, the list favors experiences that invite families to explore, learn, and slow down together. Whether it's spotting whales off the coast of British Columbia or wandering through storybook villages in the UK, each destination offers its own way of turning time away into lasting memories.
