Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library shows how far one gift can travel
Dolly Parton gave the world songs people could carry for a lifetime. She also gave millions of children something small enough to hold in two hands and big enough to change a life: a first book of their own.
In 1995, she started Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in her home county in East Tennessee, inspired by her father’s inability to read and write. What began with local preschool children grew into a book-gifting program that now reaches families across five countries. Every month, more than three million free, age-appropriate books are mailed to children from birth to age five, regardless of their family’s income.
It is hard to measure the full reach of that kind of good. Some of it shows up in bedtime routines, in a child recognizing their own name on a package, in a parent getting one more reason to sit close and read aloud. Dolly’s voice filled concert halls, but her generosity also found its way into living rooms, laps, libraries, and little hands. That is a beautiful legacy: helping children imagine a bigger world before they can even read all the words for it.
We’re also recording a special episode today in honor of Dolly Parton’s life and the extraordinary good her work set in motion. Listen to the special episode of our podcast here.

Trail cameras capture rare footage of African serval kittens
Trail cameras in Tanzania captured rare footage of African serval kittens, giving researchers and wildlife lovers a glimpse of a cat many people never get to see. The kittens look delicate and fierce at the same time, all long legs, alert faces, and wild possibility. Sometimes conservation begins with seeing who is already there.
