One Bird's Journey Signals a Comeback |
For the first time in 122 years, a wild California condor was spotted in Oregon, marking a hopeful milestone in the species' remarkable recovery. According to Jefferson Public Radio, the young condor, known as B9, was released through the Yurok Tribe’s restoration program and now has completed a 380-mile journey through Northern California and Southern Oregon.
From its lowest recorded 22 birds remaining back in the 80’s, California condors have slowly made their return to the wild thanks to decades of conservation efforts. B9’s visit suggests these endangered birds are once again exploring historic habitats on their own – a promising sign that the species is beginning to reclaim its place in nature.

One Dog Gets a New set of Wheels |
After a family dog’s custom wheelchair was stolen from her porch in Nova Scotia, the local community quickly rallied, launching a fundraiser to help. CTV News reports the outpouring of support has already helped raise enough funds toward a replacement for Smidgen, a beloved 10-year-old dog who has used a wheelchair since becoming paralyzed six years ago. It’s a heartening example of how quickly people can come together when a helping hand is needed, giving Smidgen a path back to the neighborhood walks that have made her a familiar face to so many.

A Lifeline for Seniors Gets a Major Boost |
Meals on Wheels America has received a $70 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, one of the largest contributions in its history. According to TIME, the funding comes at a critical moment, as organizations supporting older adults work to meet growing needs in communities across the country.
Meals on Wheels plans to use the gift to strengthen its nationwide network and expand its long-term capacity to serve elderly people experiencing food insecurity and social isolation. More broadly, the investment reflects a growing awareness that thriving communities are built by caring for people at every stage of life.

The Health of a Connected Life |
Activities we often think of as simple pleasures like meeting a friend for coffee, joining a community group, reading a book, or attending a local event may play a more significant role in healthy aging than we realize. A study published in GeroScience found that regular social and cognitive engagement was associated with maintaining strength, independence, and well-being later in life.
The findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that long-term wellness isn't only shaped by what we eat or how we exercise, but also by how we stay connected, curious, and engaged with the world around us.

A Different Kind of Knowing |
Some forms of knowledge can’t be understood from a book or explained in a lecture – only experienced in life. Psyche explores the idea that our deepest understanding of things like pain, love, grief, beauty, and awe comes not from facts or descriptions, but from living through them.
Drawing on the work of philosopher Bertrand Russell, philosopher Matt Duncan argues that there is a special kind of knowledge that comes through direct experience. It’s a perspective that reminds us some of life’s most meaningful truths aren’t things we can fully explain, but things we come to know by being present for them.
