 Good Health & Wellness
After three months in hospital, António received a visitor with four paws: his dog, Princesa. São João Hospital in Porto, Portugal, now lets selected patients welcome their own pets onto the wards, following individual assessments and veterinary checks.
Euronews watched the pair reunite on October 2. António described the visit as a lift during rehabilitation, and the hospital reported no related infections since the protocol began in July. The program offers companionship; its effect on medical recovery has not been established.

 Good Ideas
A fabric developed from work on protective clothing is being put to work over strawberries. North Carolina State University researchers tested Plant Armor, a porous, three-dimensional cover that lets light, rain and air reach plants while creating a barrier against insects.
In tunnel field tests, covered plants produced up to 3.56 times as much harvestable fruit as uncovered plants. The researchers now call for on-farm tests across more crops and locations. Reduced pesticide and water use remain potential benefits, not savings established by that harvest figure.

 Good Ideas
Twenty-five Detroit educators have joined a new partnership with Michigan State University to strengthen their skills in teaching students with autism. The district is paying for the additional endorsement, allowing teachers to train while remaining in their classrooms.
The training includes communication supports, classroom structure and collaboration with families. Teachers can apply those skills while continuing to teach, building expertise inside the district. The funded endorsement is separate from a full master’s degree, and the first cohort is still working toward its qualifications.

 Good for the Soul
Frankie Hooper went to the World Conker Championships with friends and left as the overall champion. At the October 11 event in Southwick, England, she won the women’s contest, then defeated men’s winner Simon Griffiths for the title.
The contest turns a playground pastime into a tournament: competitors swing horse chestnuts on strings, trying to break an opponent’s conker while keeping their own intact. This year, Hooper’s survived the final. The championships also raise funds for charities supporting people with visual impairments.
