handwritten holiday hope, multiplied

Hundreds of seniors across British Columbia will receive a handwritten Christmas card this year thanks to one woman’s thoughtfulness. It began as a family gesture during the pandemic, but has grown into a community-wide tradition. Now powered by nearly 100 volunteers writing heartfelt notes for care homes, hospice units, and housing programs, the project passed 1,000 cards for the first time this year, according to Sunny Skyz.

Each card received is a warm reminder that someone, somewhere, is holding them in thought. Volunteers say the cards bring joy on both sides, strengthening friendships, drawing families together, and weaving a web of care through the community.

warmth that nurtures body and mind

Staying warm in winter can be one of the simplest, most nourishing ways for older adults to feel their best during the cold season, according to The Art of Healthy Living. A cosy home supports steady energy, easier movement, clearer breathing, and an overall greater sense of comfort which help people stay active, connected, and confident. Small added habits like layering up, gentle indoor movement, and keeping rooms comfortably heated can create a supportive environment where warmth and wellbeing can thrive.

Those everyday comforts add up to better rest, a brighter mood, and the simple joy of feeling held and grounded at home. In many ways, warmth becomes a soft, steady companion that helps winter feel a little kinder to those who need it most.

YOUR PAST MAY BE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

A recent psychology study suggests we may be able to unlock richer childhood memories simply by seeing ourselves as younger. Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University found that when adults briefly experienced an illusion of owning a younger version of their face, they recalled far more vivid, sensory details from early life. Featured in PsyPost, the findings hint at a deep link between our physical self-image and how we access our past.

The illusion didn’t boost recent memories, only the emotionally textured, time-traveling kind tied to lived experience. Scientists believe this works because the brain stores body-related cues as part of each memory, and reintroducing those cues may help reopen doors long thought closed.

A HOPEFUL PATH TO SELF-SUSTAINING URBAN LIFE

New research published in Sustainability outlines a promising neighborhood model that brings food, energy, and mobility closer to home. Using just a fraction of available space, communities in the model generated enough fresh food to meet local demand and cut carbon-heavy food miles almost entirely, showing how North American cities could reach full vegetable self-sufficiency by growing produce on rooftops, facades, and shared lots.

The framework also maps out a renewable-powered delivery system, using sidewalk solar panels to charge small electric transport units that move produce to nearby markets and grocers. Researchers found this integrated design could reduce neighborhood CO₂ emissions by up to 98%, offering a hopeful blueprint for cities striving to become more walkable, resilient, and nourishing from the ground up.

A DESERT ESCAPE THAT'S KIND TO YOUR WALLET

Phoenix just claimed the top spot as the most affordable getaway in the American West, with a three-night summer trip for two averaging about $1,120, according to an analysis shared by Travel + Leisure. Travelers get a lot for that price tag: Victorian-era charm at The Square PHX, golden-hour hikes on Camelback Mountain, and long, art-filled walks down Roosevelt Row, all with plenty of ways to stay outside, savor the desert light, and keep the spending low.

The ranking also highlights a wider map of budget-friendly escapes, from Concord, North Carolina (the only destination under $1,000 for a three-night stay) to El Centro, California, Las Vegas, and several Texas cities like Brownsville, where taco trails and Gulf breezes come standard. Together, they sketch a hopeful picture for travelers who want memories over markup: more cities intentionally within reach, and more chances to trade screen time for skyline views, live music, and slow strolls through new streets.
